My older son has issues with sleep and nightmares, which is hard on the whole family. We have been seeing a naturopath who wanted to check his iron levels, since iron helps prevent nightmares and supports good sleep.
His blood panel showed that while his iron levels are fine, his iron absorption is low. This means that too few of his red blood cells are absorbing the iron that they are getting, so some of that goodness is being wasted.
She recommended that we add an iron supplement to his diet. We have used 2 kinds of iron, and I will compare them here.
Renzo’s Iron Supplements
We started out taking Renzo’s Iron Supplements for kids. They are orange flavored, chewable, and very popular with kids. They are vegan, sugar-free, and my kids still loved them. The box comes with 2 adorable stickers, which my younger one immediately claimed.
We took Renzo’s for the first few months and one of my kids still loves them, while the other has decided they are too “fizzy.” For a time, both my kids were taking two tablets a day.
What I loved most about Renzo’s iron supplements is that they offer a money-back guarantee if your kids don’t like them. I’m sure not that many people take them up on it, but it is comforting to know that you won’t be out $20 if your kid just won’t take these iron vitamins.
Lifeable Kids Iron + Vitamin C Gummies
The second (and current) iron supplement for kids we are taking is the Lifeable Kids Iron + Vitamin C.
The Lifeable Kids iron supplement is a gummy rather than a chewable tablet, and he likes the taste ok on this one. These are grape-flavored and while my son doesn’t like that it isn’t sugar-coated like other gummies, I see that as a feature, not a bug.
Both Renzo’s and Lifeable contain both iron and vitamin C, so don’t be fooled by Lifeable’s better marketing on this one. You’ll be getting just about the same ingredients in both. Renzo’s contains 9 mg of iron and Lifeable has 10 mg, so kids will be taking 2 of each regardless of which brand you go with.
Which Iron Supplement is Best for Kids?
Both Renzo’s and Lifeable are excellent products, with great reviews and providing the same amount of iron. One of my kids prefers Renzo’s, and the other prefers Lifeable. You really can’t go wrong, especially with Renzo’s money-back guarantee. If one doesn’t work out, you can easily try another!
